Executive Director's Corner

The Trust awarded over $21M in grants on April 3rd and now we are busy getting the contracts and paperwork out to the grantees.  I want to thank all the successful grant recipients who attended our Grantee Seminars across the state last week.  We held two meetings in Lincoln, one in Grand Island and another in North Platte.  It was great seeing old friends and getting to meet new award winners.  Listening to everyone describe their projects gets us excited to begin our partnership with them.

Staff has been busy with Earthday celebrations the past two weekends in Lincoln and Omaha.  May will include the Nebraska’s Children’s Groundwater Festival in Grand Island, Thompson Creek Bio Blitz and Lauritzen Garden’s Spring into Spring Festival in Omaha.  June 7th will bring Waterfest at Holmes Lake in Lincoln.

Kevin Peterson from Osceola was confirmed by the Legislature to represent District 1 on the Trust Board.  Kevin was appointed by the Governor to replace James Stuart Jr.

After consultation with the Stuart family, it was decided that memorials given to the Trust in Jim’s name will be used for restorations to the Ferguson House and the carriage house.  Jim had expressed an interest in addressing those issues recently.  We want to thank the Stuart family for selecting the Trust as a recipient of those memorials.

Leftover Medication Take-back

Proper medication disposal is important to protect our aquatic environment, reduce the risk of accidental poisonings, and to deter illegal drug diversion in our communities.  There are 40 different pharmacies in Lincoln-Lancaster County that can take back your leftover medications such as non-controlled and over-the-counter pills, creams, ointments, and inhalers year round.  Ask your local pharmacy, visit www.leftovermeds.com, or call the Poison Help Line at 800-222-1222 to find medication disposal location near you. Currently pharmacies are not legally allowed to collect your controlled medications (e.g. narcotics, amphetamines) for disposal.  But, on April 26th from 10am-2pm there will be a National DEA Medication Take-Back Day that allows the collection of all leftover medications including controlled substances. Grantee Seminars and Forms

The Trust held a total of four Grantee Seminars this past week with two being in Lincoln, one in Grand Island and in North Platte. A total of 83 grant recipients attended the seminars. We were excited to meet and visit with our new grant recipients as well as some of the old ones.

For those who did not have an opportunity to attend the Grantee Seminar, your grant packets are on their way. Be sure to get all your forms in by April 30, 2014. Forms due by then are:
